Why the formulas exist

I struggled with acne since I was a teenager. Then, in my late twenties, I developed contact dermatitis. I saw a dermatologist, had allergy testing done, and used only the products I was told were safe for me. My skin kept getting worse.

With as many as 40 ingredients in a single product, I couldn’t tell what my skin was reacting to. The more I looked into skincare, the more it seemed to fall into two camps: long, clinical formulas I could barely understand or ancestral blends with sourcing I couldn’t fully trust.

I wanted short, understandable formulas built with high-quality ingredients.

I started with a simple beeswax balm, then added aloe gel when I learned that hydration needed to come before sealing. The rashes started to clear.

But I was using something made for sunburns followed by something made for dry hands. I wanted versions designed for the face. I couldn’t find them, so I started making my own.

Where the name came from

The Lost Coast Trail follows twenty-five miles of remote Northern California coastline that highways don’t reach. When you hike it, you carry everything you need for the trip. The coast is wild, but getting through it depends on a few good systems: what you carry, where you camp, and when the tides let you pass. I wanted to bring some of that organized simplicity back to my everyday life. The brand grew from there.
